Find y′ if y = x² + cosx . 

Solution:

We have y = x² + cosx . 

Therefore,

y′ = dy/dx = d/dx ( x² + cosx ) 

y′ = d/dx( x² ) + d/dx( cosx )

y′ = 2x^{( 2 − 1 )} + ( − sin x ) 

y′ = 2x − sin x .

y′ = dy/dx = 2x − sin x .
